Blepharoplasty Questions

Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, and Glastonbury, Connecticut

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgery performed on the eyelids to restore a youthful, healthy appearance.

How do I know if blepharoplasty is for me?

If you have noticed that you look tired, sick, or angry no matter how you are feeling, blepharoplasty may be able to help you. If your upper lids sag and your lower lids are puffy, blepharoplasty may be a good procedure. Bags under the eyes can also be removed.

Can I have both my upper and lower eyelids done at the same time?

If you desire surgery on both your upper and lower eyelids, it is best to have all blepharoplasty procedures performed at the same time.

Does blepharoplasty affect vision?

If you had extreme droopiness of the eyelids, the scope of your vision may have been limited and may be improved by blepharoplasty. There may be some minor effects immediately after your procedure, such as light sensitivity, but these will pass.

How is blepharoplasty performed?

Most blepharoplasty is performed in our office under local anesthesia. Incisions are made in the natural folds and creases of the eyelids so that the tiny scars will be well concealed. Skin and sometimes fat is removed from the eyelids, and then the incisions are closed. The procedure can take between 30 and 90 minutes.

What is recovery from blepharoplasty like?

There will be some swelling and discoloration after your procedure. You will experience some minor discomfort. You should use an icepack to keep swelling and bruising down, and you will be given antibiotic ointment to use. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may return to work after 1-10 days. Dr. Foster will remove your sutures during the first week. By the second week, all the bruising and swelling and discomfort should be gone, but some people experience dry eyes for several weeks and may require eye drops.

Are the effects of my blepharoplasty permanent?

Blepharoplasty will reduce the effects of aging, but will not stop them. Think of it as turning back the clock, but not stopping it. Over time, the effects of aging will again become visible, but many people report 5-10 years of great results from their blepharoplasty.

What procedures can complement the results of my blepharoplasty?

Many people see the best results from their blepharoplasty when it is combined with other procedures. If you have crow's feet, these can be addressed with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. Many people have low-hanging brows that contribute to the aged, angry, or tired appearance of their face. These can be raised with a brow lift procedure.
