What to Expect Before, During, and After Breast Augmentation

Each surgery is different from another, and each individual’s recovery time will differ depending on several different factors that Dr. Foster will prepare you for. This being said, some general expectations can be had by all prospective breast augmentation patients.

Your consultation – The first step of the process will be your consultation with Dr. Foster. This will be a two-visit consultation where he will review your medical history, discuss your goals, your options, and risks. During your second visit, you will again discuss risks and any other concerns and questions you may have. The date of your surgery will then be arranged.
Your surgery – Augmentation surgeries typically take a couple hours, depending on the size and type of the implant. General anesthesia will be used to ensure that you have a comfortable, pain-free surgery.
Your recovery – You will be sent home the same day with only a small waterproof dressing – no bulky bandages, bindings or bra are necessary. Dr. Foster will provide you with detailed massage instructions that you will need to follow in order to aid the healing process and to decrease the chance of capsular contracture.

Some bruising and swelling can occur. Pain medication will be prescribed to help alleviate any discomfort you may experience in the few days following surgery. Be sure to contact Dr. Foster immediately if you notice any unusual or excessive swelling, or pain.

Implants can take several weeks or months to settle into their final position. Subpectoral implants tend to take longer to settle. This can cause a certain amount of anxiety, but rest assured that this is common to all breast augmentation patients.
