Breast Augmentation Incisions

Hartford, CT

There are four common incision options for breast augmentation. Each has its own advantages, disadvantages, and risks. Which one is right for you will depend on a number of things. Most breast augmentation patients are concerned about where their scars will be located, and use that as their main criteria for choosing an incision location. Other factors such as your breast size before surgery and whether you plan to have children in the future may affect your choice of incision. Here are your options:

  • Inframammary – In the crease under the breast is the most commonly chosen incision option. Most plastic surgeons prefer this incision because it gives them the most control over the placement of the implant. It is also the option with the least amount of risk of complication. Depending on the type of implant you choose, these incisions are usually no longer than an inch.
  • Peri-areolar – These incisions are made around the nipple and are often the incision of choice for women who are also having a breast lift or areola reduction. Scarring is often imperceptible with peri-areolar incisions, as the scar tissue blends well with the rest of the areola. This option may not be ideal for women who plan to have children, since there is some (though very minimal) risk of difficulty breastfeeding after a peri-areolar procedure. There is also a greater risk of loss of nipple sensation with this option.
  • Transaxillary – Incisions in the armpit are also a very popular choice, and the best option for women who want a subpectoral implant placement. Scarring is minimal, though a concern for women who wear sleeveless apparel. Transaxillary scars can “give away” the fact that you have had an augmentation.
  • Transumbilical – This single incision is made around the belly button and is typically smaller than other incisions due to the greater flexibility of skin at the abdomen. Scarring is rarely noticeable after a transumbilical procedure.
