Breast Enlargement Questions

Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, and Glastonbury, Connecticut

What is breast enlargement?

Breast enlargement is a less formal name for breast augmentation, the most common form of breast enhancement. We use it less often because enlargement is only a part of the goals for breast augmentation. Breast augmentation can also improve the shape and overall appearance of your breasts.

Who is a good candidate for breast enlargement?

The best candidate for breast augmentation is a woman who has always had small breasts, who does not like the size or shape of her breasts, whose breasts lost shape and volume after having children, or whose breasts are uneven.

You should be in good health before your breast enlargement. You must be 18 or older to receive breast enlargement, and 22 or older to receive breast enlargement with silicone breast implants.

How is breast enlargement surgery performed?

In breast enlargement surgery, an incision is made in the breast in one of four locations:

  • The inframammary crease
  • Below or around the areola
  • In the armpit
  • Around the belly button

Then a pocket is created for the implant, either above or below the pectoral muscle, and the implant is placed in the pocket. The incisions are then closed.

There are many options in breast enlargement surgery. Which is best for me?

The many option in breast enlargement surgery allow you to get a procedure that is customized to you. It is good to understand all your options, and during your consultation with Dr. Foster, he will listen to your goals and make recommendations based on your goals and your current breasts.

How long does breast enlargement surgery take?

The surgery takes between one and two hours.

Is breast enlargement surgery painful?

During the procedure, you will be under anesthesia.  Your degree of post-operative discomfort will be very individual.  Some patients experience only mild discomfort, while others experience a higher level of discomfort that may last for days.  Medication will be prescribed, and most patients find it controls the discomfort.

How long is recovery from breast enlargement surgery?

Every woman's recovery is different, but most women return to work after about 5-7 days. Most women report feeling back to normal in about a month. You should avoid any vigorous activities for 2-4 weeks following surgery.

When will I see the final results of my breast enlargement surgery?

Some results will be immediately visible, but your final results will take up to six months to be visible. Initially, breast implants are placed high on the chest, and postoperative swelling may obscure the actual results. Over time, as your breast implants settle into place and the swelling goes down, your results will improve.

What are the risks of breast enlargement surgery?

Please see our breast augmentation complications page to learn more about the risks of the procedure.

Will breast enlargement affect my ability to breastfeed?

Probably not. Some women are naturally unable to breastfeed, and there is a slightly higher chance of not being able to breastfeed after breast enlargement surgery, but most women are able to successfully breastfeed after breast enlargement surgery.

However, pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the results of your breast enlargement surgery. Many women wait until after having children to have breast enlargement.

Will there be a scar after my breast enhancement surgery?

All surgery leaves scars.  However, the incision locations are chosen to conceal the scars, either in the inframammary crease or in the skin contours around the areola.  Proper postoperative care can also minimize the scarring.
