Breast Implant Candidacy

Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, and Glastonbury, Connecticut

Breast implant surgery is the most popular plastic surgery performed in the United States. Every year, hundreds of thousands of women receive the benefits of breast implants, including improved self-confidence, but it is not a procedure for everyone.  Some women are better candidates for breast implants than others. If you desire breast implant surgery to improve the size or shape of your breasts, you may ask: can I get breast implants?

The information on this page can serve as a primer, but the best way to learn if breast implants are right for you is to talk to Dr. Foster, who can ask you detailed questions about your medical history and conduct an exam. Please schedule a consultation today.

Breast Implant Candidate Basics

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) makes restrictions about who is a candidate for breast augmentation with breast implants. In order to be a candidate for breast implants, you must:

  • Be age 18 (for saline implants) or 22 (for silicone implants)
  • Not have breast cancer
  • Not have an active infection anywhere in your body
  • Not be pregnant or nursing

If you meet all these conditions, you may be a candidate for breast implants.

Other Medical Considerations for Breast Implants

Even if you are technically a candidate, you may not be a good candidate for breast implants. Here are some other important factors to consider in deciding on breast implants.

Breast implants may interfere with mammogram screening for breast cancer. If your family has a history of breast cancer, you should be aware that breast implants may delay detection of breast cancer.

Once you have breast implants, your breasts are forever changed. If your breast implants are removed, your breasts will likely be different in shape and size than they are now.

Women with autoimmune disorders like lupus or scleroderma are considered poor candidates for breast implants.

Be sure to talk to Dr. Foster about any medications you are currently taking (including herbal supplements). Some of these may affect your ability to heal after the surgery or increase surgical risks.

Other Considerations for Breast Implants

In addition to the medical concerns, there are some psychological factors that can impact your ability to get the best possible results from your breast implant surgery.

First, you have to be willing to educate yourself about the risks and complications of breast augmentation. Complications are rare, but they do happen. If you know the risks beforehand, you can help identify complications earlier and ensure they get corrected and don't prevent you from getting the great results you desire.

You also have to be willing and able to make your follow-up visits and follow pre- and post-surgical instructions. Great results depend on a great recovery, and if you don't make your follow-up visits it becomes much harder for us to help you get the results you desire.

Finally, women who suffer from clinical depression or other psychological disorders rarely get the results they desire from breast implants. It is important to ensure that you are receiving treatment for any diagnosed psychological disorders before you consider breast implants.

As we said before, the best way to learn if you are a good candidate for breast implants is to have a consultation with Dr. Foster. Please call or email us today to schedule an appointment at our Waterbury, Glastonbury, or Greenwich office today.
