Breast Implant Rupture

Breast Surgery in Hartford, Greenwich and Waterbury, Connecticut

It is important to understand that your breast implants are not meant to last forever. As a result, it is likely that at some point in time, your implant may rupture. If you believe your breast implant has ruptured, you should consult Dr. Foster at once to schedule an examination.

Dr. Foster may perform a mammogram, ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to confirm whether your implant has in fact ruptured. If it has, he may recommend the following treatments for the condition:

  • Surgical removal of the implant and scar tissue
  • Insertion of a replacement implant

You will need to weigh the risks and benefits of breast augmentation revision surgery vs. removing your breast implant. Dr. Foster will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your decision.

Saline Breast Implant Rupture

If you have a ruptured saline implant,it will usually leak rapidly, creating a deflated appearance similar to a balloon which has lost a substantial amount of air. You should be able to detect the rupture since your breast will undergo a significant change in size and/or shape rather quickly.

The leaking saline solution will be absorbed by your body. It is usually harmless; however, you will most likely want to address the issue in order to restore a symmetrical breast appearance.

Silicone Breast Implant Rupture

The contents of a ruptured silicone breast implant leak much more slowly than its saline counterpart. As a result, you may have a ruptured silicone implant for months or even years before it is ever detected.

When your implant ruptures, the silicone gel that leaks out may react with the scar tissue surrounding your implant, resulting in inflammation and the formation of new scar tissue. This may cause a warped breast shape as well as some pain.

While there are generally no signs that your silicone breast implant has ruptured, you may on occasion experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Pain, burning, tingling, swelling, numbness, or redness in the breast
  • Hard knots or lumps surrounding the implant or in the armpit
  • Distorted breast shape
  • Softening or hardening of the breast

There is no clinical evidence to indicate that a ruptured silicone breast implant will lead to any type of serious health consequences. However, it is a good idea to treat the condition as soon as it is detected to prevent additional silicone from leaking into your body.
