Types of Breast Implants

Hartford, CT

Breast implants come in several different sizes, shapes, profiles, and textures. Implants may be filled with silicone or saline, and some are even adjustable. You and Dr. Foster will discuss the many varieties available to you during your consultation to ensure that you choose the size and type that will best enhance your physique.

Here is a brief list of implant types:

  • Saline or silicone-filled – Both have specific advantages. Silicone implants tend to look and feel more natural, while saline is generally regarded as safer and also requires a smaller incision. Many saline implants are filled after they are inserted, which can reduce the risk of stretch marks. There is a minimum age requirement of 22 for getting silicone implants.
  • Contoured or rounded – Contoured implants tend to look and feel more natural, though they are a bit more expensive. There is some risk that a contoured implant may invert itself - something that is not a concern with rounded implants.
  • Textured or smooth – Textured implants were developed in order to reduce the risk of capsular contracture and - in the case of contoured implants – the risk of the implant inverting itself. Textured implants have a thicker shell, which makes them easier to feel. This can be an issue for women with little or no natural breast tissue.
  • Profile – The profile of an implant determines how far out the implant projects from the chest wall. If your chest wall is low or sunken, then a higher profile implant may be best for you.

Dr. Foster has no preference in regards to which type of implant he likes to use. Your body type, aesthetic goals, and your other concerns will be the determining factors in choosing the best option for you.
