Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, Glastonbury - Connecticut

Any combination of aging, sun damage, heredity, smoking, or fluid imbalances can cause your eyelids to sag. These same things can also cause bags to develop under the eyes. These conditions often result in the appearance of fatigue, illness, or any number of negative emotions and moods. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure which can reverse these conditions by removing excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids, restoring your youthful, healthy, well-rested appearance.

As you age, the skin around your eyes loses elasticity. This loss in elasticity causes the skin of the upper eyelid to droop and fat to collect beneath it. When this happens to the lower eyelid, the orbital septum weakens, allowing fat to descend into the lower eyelid. A blepharoplasty can tighten up this skin and remove the excess fat. Any fat that is removed will not return.

Procedure and Recovery

Dr. Foster performs most eyelid surgeries in-office using only local anesthesia. Incisions are made within the natural folds and creases of the eyelids so scarring is minimally an issue. Most patients have both the upper and lower eyelids operated on for best results, though some patients only require one or the other.

Most patients who have both their upper and lower eyelids operated on are allowed to go home immediately after surgery. You can expect to go back to normal activities in seven to ten days. Patients who have only their upper eyelids worked on can usually return to normal activities much sooner – one to two days, in many cases.

Eyelid surgery typically results in some degree of discoloration and swelling. You will be instructed to use antibiotic ointment for 48 hours after surgery, as well as ice on the eyelids for 24 to 48 hours. You will need to keep your head elevated during this time to reduce swelling. You should not put any makeup on your incisions. Dr. Foster will remove your sutures within a week’s time.
