Types of Facelift Surgery

Hartford, CT

There are a few common facelift types, or methods. The conventional facelift procedure remains the most commonly used. Each of the other facelift types are variations on the conventional facelift.

  • Conventional facelift – Dr. Foster begins this procedure by making an incision that begins above the ear usually in front of the hairline. This incision proceeds downward in front of the ear, then makes a turn around the earlobe and continues up the back of the ear and then toward the back of the scalp. All efforts are made to meticulously close the incisions to avoid visible scarring.
  • Once this incision is made, Dr. Foster will lift the facial skin away from the layer of fat underneath. The SMAS muscle is then tightened. Excess neck fat can be removed at this point. Dr. Foster will then “lift” the facial skin up and backward. This will stretch the skin, smoothing out wrinkles, smile lines, and the nasolabial folds. Any sagging around the jaw line and neck is also eliminated. At this point, Dr. Foster will remove the excess skin at the incision line. Once this is complete, the remaining skin is ready to be sutured, and the facelift is complete.
  • SMAS lift – This variation uses the same incision path as the conventional facelift. The major difference is that the incision goes deeper, under the muscle.
  • Extended facelift – This method joins the two incisions at the top of the scalp, which allows for the forehead to be lifted, eliminating forehead and brow wrinkles.

All facelift patients, regardless of which type they choose, should expect to go home with their head and face wrapped in bulky bandages that will need to be worn for several days. Some degree of swelling, discoloration, and discomfort should be expected. Pain medication will be prescribed for you to help your recovery. Dr. Foster will provide you with detailed post-op instructions to follow.
