How to Prepare for Liposuction

Serving Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, Glastonbury, Connecticut

While liposuction has become a very routine, safe procedure in recent years, it is still major surgery and as a result, is associated with certain risks. In order to ensure the best possible results and reduce your chances of complications, it is important to properly prepare for the procedure.

The first stage of the process is to schedule a consultation with Hartford plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Foster. At your consultation, Dr. Foster will explain the entire procedure to you in great detail, including how to prepare, the results you can expect to achieve, and any possible risks associated with your liposuction procedure. He will also review your medical history to determine the best way to proceed with your procedure. It is important to answer all of Dr. Foster’s questions as honestly as possible to ensure your procedure goes as smoothly and safely as possible.

Lifestyle Adjustments Prior to Liposuction

For two weeks prior to undergoing liposuction, you will need to stop taking any medications which may interfere with blood clotting. These include:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen and all other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Certain vitamins, herbs, and nutritional supplements, such as Vitamin E
  • Certain birth control medications

You will also need to stop smoking at least 1 month before surgery, and refrain from smoking for 1 month after your liposuction has been completed. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, which can lead to circulation issues following surgery. It can also interfere with proper healing.

If you plan on losing weight before undergoing liposuction, make sure you can reasonably maintain your new weight after surgery. Significant weight gain following liposuction could negatively impact your results.

Other Considerations in Preparation for Liposuction

Please be aware of the following points when preparing for your liposuction procedure:

  • Do not shave near the surgical region for at least 24 hours prior to your procedure, since shaving can lead to ingrown hairs following surgery, and infection
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes the day of your procedure. You will find this type of clothing much more comfortable following surgery.
  • Make arrangements to have someone drive you to and from the hospital on the day of your procedure, and make sure someone is available to stay with you the first day following surgery.
