What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Lipo Surgery

Your Consultation

Your liposuction process will begin at your initial consultation with Dr. Foster. He will review your medical history and discuss your goals and expectations with you. With this information, he will be able to put together an individualized treatment plan that is right for you. Many prospective liposuction patients come to the consultation with only one or two trouble spots in mind. Sometimes removing fat from one area can cause asymmetries and look unnatural. If applicable, Dr. Foster will advise you on whether you should consider other areas in order to achieve a well-proportioned, natural-looking physique after surgery.

The Surgery

Most liposuction procedures are performed in the office. Local anesthetic and pain medication are typically all that is necessary, though general anesthesia is an option for more extensive procedures. The amount of time the surgery will take depends greatly on the amount of volume that needs to be removed and the number of locations that need attention. 

Dr. Foster uses the “super wet” technique which lessens bruising and pain, and an ultrasonic liposuction or SmartLipo device which causes less tissue trauma and less bleeding than traditional liposuction. You should feel little to no discomfort whatsoever during the procedure itself.

Your Recovery

Some discomfort should be expected in the few days following your surgery. Medication will be prescribed for pain management. You will be sent home with a contour garment that is to be worn for four weeks to ensure proper healing. At the end of four weeks, most of the swelling will have gone down, though it can take a few more months before the swelling is gone entirely. You will notice immediate results following your surgery, but it is important to be patient, as it will take several months before the final result is apparent.

Moderate exercise is encouraged as soon as possible after surgery. This may be as soon as a few days. Exercise will aid in healing and reduce the risk of complications. Dr. Foster will give you detailed, individualized post-op instructions for you to follow so that you can help make your recovery time as short as possible.
