Male Breast Reduction ( Gynecomastia )

Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, Glastonbury - Connecticut

Many males develop excess breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia, at some point in their life. This is often a significant source of embarrassment for both adolescent and adult males. There are numerous causes for male breast development; some known, some unknown. Heredity, congenital problems, drug side-effects, weight gain, and disease are only a few of them. Although it may help to some extent, weight loss will usually not correct this problem nor will any other treatment except male breast reduction surgery.

Procedure

Male breast reduction is typically done on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. The surgery is different from female breast reduction surgery. Dr. Foster makes a small incision in the armpit through which he uses an ultrasonic liposuction device to remove the breast tissue. Ultrasonic liposuction or SmartLipo is highly effective, safe, and allows for very little scarring and healing problems. Local anesthesia is usually sufficient for most patients, though general anesthesia is an option. A typical male breast reduction surgery lasts anywhere from one to two hours, depending on the amount of volume that needs removal. If you have redundant skin, you may need a skin excision procedure.

Recovery

Results are immediately noticeable, though you will likely experience some degree of swelling and bruising. You will be provided with a special garment to help reduce this swelling. This garment is to be worn for a month to allow for proper healing to occur. You can expect to go home shortly after the surgery, and to return to normal activities within one to three weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery and how quickly your body heals.

Pain medication will be prescribed for you, but you can expect most of the pain to go away within a few days. It is important to keep in mind that it can take up to three months for all of the swelling to go away and for the final result to be apparent. Complications are very rare. However, any abnormal swelling or pain during the recovery period should be reported to Dr. Foster immediately.
