Nose Surgery ( Rhinoplasty )

Hartford, Greenwich, Waterbury, Glastonbury - Connecticut

The nose is one of the most noticeable facial features, and one of the first things people focus on when they look at you. Unfortunately, the nose is also the first thing to get noticed when it is too large, asymmetrical, or has any other irregular contours. If you are self-conscious or embarrassed by the appearance of your nose then rhinoplasty may be perfect for you.

Here are some of the more common nose contour issues:

  • A nose that has a hump anywhere along the nasal bridge
  • A nose that is too long, or one that has a drooping nasal tip, sometimes called “witches nose”
  • A wide nose, or excessively flared nostrils
  • An enlarged nasal tip
  • An upturned nose or one that has an excessively recessed nasal bridge
  • An asymmetrical or crooked nose

Beyond the common exterior deformities of the nose, many people suffer from internal deformities. The most common condition is a deviated septum. This may be acquired, congenital, or the result of trauma, and can cause partial or full obstruction of the nasal airway. As a result, breathing can become impaired in one or both nostrils, exacerbating other dangerous conditions such as sleep apnea. Internal nasal deformities are a hazard to your general health, and not a cosmetic issue. If you suspect that you might have an interior nasal deformity, you should consult a physician.

Procedure and Recovery

Dr. Foster performs most rhinoplasty procedures on an outpatient basis. However, more extensive work may require general anesthesia and a hospital stay. For most corrections, Dr. Foster makes incisions inside the nose in order to prevent visible scarring. Nasal tip enhancements often require a small incision be made under the tip. This scar is rarely noticeable after healing.

You should expect swelling and bruising after your surgery. Small nasal packs will be used to control bleeding and to aid in healing. Most swelling and bruising will go away after ten days. You may return to work and most activity at this time. The exact length of your recovery time will depend on the extent of work that needs to be performed.
