Tummy tucks, also known as abdominoplasty, are a very popular solution for women who have had multiple pregnancies and who want to restore the youthful abdomen they once had as part of a mommy makeover. An abdominoplasty is a surgery which removes the excess skin and fat that accumulates in the lower abdominal area. Abdominal muscles can also be tightened if they are a contributing factor. While this is usually associated with multiple pregnancies, many individuals who have experienced weight gain or significant weight loss can also develop problem areas in the lower abdomen. Unfortunately, diet and exercise are not enough to fix these problems.
There are three parts to a typical abdominoplasty procedure. First, the excess skin and fat that has accumulated in the lower abdominal area is removed. Dr. Foster does this by making a series of incisions that remove the excess skin and allow the existing skin to be closed tightly. The majority of these incisions are made below the bikini line, which allows for very inconspicuous post-surgical scarring. Abdominoplasty often has the added benefit of getting rid of stretch marks, appendectomy scars and cesarean scars.
The second step involves tightening the abdominal muscles. Women who have had multiple pregnancies develop a separation between these muscles. Dr. Foster is able to permanently suture these muscles back together. The final step involves relocating the belly button to its original position, then closing the incisions in multiple layers in order to produce a very thin scarring. Liposuction is often used at this point to enhance the final result.
Dr. Foster performs most tummy tucks on an outpatient basis, utilizing general anesthesia. However, more minor abdominoplasty procedures may only require sedation and local anesthesia.
