Though not as popular as they once were, collagen injections are still the treatment of choice for many individuals who want to get rid of crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, smile lines and other wrinkles. Collagen is a compound that occurs naturally in the skin that adds volume and maintains elasticity. In fact, it makes up about 80 percent of the skin. As we age, our bodies lose the ability to maintain sufficient collagen levels in the skin. When this happens, the face is usually the first area of the body to show it.

Ideal candidates for collagen injections are anywhere from 35 to 60 years old. Several types of facial wrinkles respond well to collagen injections, though other injectable fillers may be more effective for certain types of wrinkles and lines.

Collagen is injected into the skin with a very fine needle. It immediately adds volume to the skin, lifting up and smoothing out wrinkles. Local anesthetic is all that is necessary for pain management. Your treatment may last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on the size of the area you wish to have treated and the number of injections necessary. You may require a skin test prior to the actual procedure.

You can expect some swelling and discoloration following the procedure, but this should go away within a couple days. Over-the-counter pain relievers will probably be sufficient during your recovery. You can expect to return to your regular activities immediately after you leave Dr. Foster’s office. We advise most collagen patients to stay out of the sun for a few days after treatment.

Collagen injections are not permanent, and will require follow up treatments. These treatments are not as long-lasting as other injectable fillers on the market. You should expect touch up treatments every two to three months in order to maintain your new, youthful look. Other fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and BOTOX® provide longer-lasting results and may be more appropriate for certain types of wrinkles and lines. Dr. Foster will be able to advise you of your best options during your initial consultation.
