What Is A Facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that addresses sagging facial tissue to reduce wrinkling and other effects of aging. The trend in facial rejuvenation is to restore volume with fillers and to do minimal techniques with lasers to tighten the skin. Dr. Foster has extensive experience with fillers, and BOTOX ®.

Will A Facelift Change My Appearance?

A facelift will make you look younger, but Dr. Foster will design your facelift to protect the character of your face. You will still be you, only look younger. Some patients need a little more. Still, patients want little downtime and the best result possible. Dr. Foster uses the MACS lift and S Lift procedures for patients who need more of a lift for rejuvenation.

What Does A Facelift Treat?

A facelift will improve many signs of facial aging, including:

  • Wrinkles and folds
  • Loose, hanging skin
  • Jowls
  • Excess facial fat or displaced facial fat

A facelift can address all these signs of facial aging simultaneously.

Types Of Facelift Surgery

There are a few common facelift types or methods. The conventional facelift procedure remains the most commonly used. Each of the other facelift types are variations on the conventional facelift.

Conventional Facelift

Dr. Foster begins this procedure by making an incision that begins above the ear usually in front of the hairline. This incision proceeds downward in front of the ear, then makes a turn around the earlobe and continues up the back of the ear and then toward the back of the scalp. All efforts are made to meticulously close the incisions to avoid visible scarring. Once this incision is made, Dr. Foster will lift the facial skin away from the layer of fat underneath. The SMAS muscle is then tightened. Excess neck fat can be removed at this point. Dr. Foster will then “lift” the facial skin up and backward. This will stretch the skin, smoothing out wrinkles, smile lines, and the nasolabial folds. Any sagging around the jawline and neck is also eliminated. At this point, Dr. Foster will remove the excess skin at the incision line. Once this is complete, the remaining skin is ready to be sutured, and the facelift is complete.

SMAS Lift

This variation uses the same incision path as the conventional facelift. The major difference is that the incision goes deeper, under the muscle.

Extended Facelift

This method joins the two incisions at the top of the scalp, which allows for the forehead to be lifted, eliminating forehead and brow wrinkles.

All facelift patients, regardless of which type they choose, should expect to go home with their head and face wrapped in bulky bandages that will need to be worn for several days. Some degree of swelling, discoloration, and discomfort should be expected. Pain medication will be prescribed for you to help your recovery. Dr. Foster will provide you with detailed post-op instructions to follow.

What Are The Alternatives To A Facelift?

Nothing gives the same amount of rejuvenation and the same long-lasting results as a facelift. However, some targeted areas can see short-term results with BOTOX® Cosmeticfacial fillers, or the skin-tightening Affirm laser. In general, these procedures are quick and require no recovery time but have very short-term results. The best treatment for you depends on your anatomy and your goals, which you can discuss with Dr. Foster in detail during your consultation.

How long Is Recovery From A Facelift?

The extent of the facelift and the length of its results are directly related to the length of recovery. For less significant improvement of facial aging, recovery may be a couple of days, but more extensive rejuvenation may require up to two weeks of recovery time. The amount of discomfort you experience is more individual, and not necessarily proportional to the procedure. In any case, you will be given a prescription for medication to control any discomfort you might feel. Expect to swell and bruising for the length of the recovery period, sometimes slightly longer.

Are The Results Of A Facelift Permanent?

“>Your facelift will turn back the clock on your facial aging, but it cannot stop the continuing effects of time on your face. Many patients report looking “young” for ten years after their facelift. Though you will continue to age normally, you will still look younger than you would have without a facelift.
