Perlane and Restylane have been the dermal filler of choice for several years now. Our skin loses volume and elasticity as we age, and this inevitably results in nasolabial folds, creases around the lips, and other wrinkles. Dermal fillers such as Perlane and Restylane are low-cost, convenient, safe, surgery-free, and natural looking solutions to help you restore your youthful appearance.
While heredity, sun damage, and lifestyle can exacerbate the negative effects of aging on our skin, we will all experience it at some point. As we age, our skin loses its ability to produce and maintain the levels of hyaluronic acid required to keep our skin looking young. Hyaluronic acid is the active ingredient in both Perlane and Restylane. When this compound is injected into your skin, it creates volume which then pushes up the skin, smoothing out wrinkles.
Both Perlane and Restylane are produced by the same manufacturer and have the same active ingredient. Perlane has a larger grain (is thicker) than Restylane which makes it more ideal for deeper-set wrinkles. Restylane, on the other hand, has a smaller grain, and is best used on more minor wrinkling. This granular composition is what differentiates them from other hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as Juvederm. Dr. Foster will be able to determine which filler is best for you. Many patients get a combination of different filler types in order to achieve maximum results.
Depending on the size of the area you want treated and the number of injections necessary, you can expect your procedure to last a few minutes after the topical anesthetic is active. You can return to normal activities immediately after your treatment. Most patients report very minor pain during and after the injections. Some swelling and redness is to be expected, though this should subside quickly.
It is important to keep in mind that neither Perlane nor Restylane are permanent solutions for wrinkles. Touch up treatments will be necessary every four to eight months in order to maintain your youthful look.
