Breast reduction surgery is essentially performed by removing fat and tissue from the breasts. Sometimes, this can be accomplished through liposuction alone. However, Dr. Foster typically employs what is called the inferior pedicle technique. This method is one of the safest and simplest because the blood supply to the areola and nipple remains liberal, and patients typically retain good sensation in the skin, nipple, and areola post-operation.
If you experience physical pain or discomfort due to overly large breasts, a breast reduction surgery can significantly relieve this pain, preventing health problems later in life due to back, neck, and shoulder stress. Most insurance will cover breast reduction surgery for this reason; it allows patients to return to physical activities they were otherwise unable to engage in for fear of breathing and circulation complications. The cosmetic benefits for patients are that they feel far less conscious about their breast size, and are freed to wear a wider variety of clothes.
Some men experience an excessive development of their mammary glands, resulting in enlarged breasts. This condition is known as gynecomastia. When present in adolescents, gynecomastia has the potential to regress, but if it has been present for over 12 months, it usually does not. Many men attempt weight loss to correct this problem, with uneven results. In such cases, male breast reduction surgery is the best solution. This is usually done with liposuction alone.
As with any cosmetic surgery, recovery depends upon the details of your procedure, and how quickly your body heals. However, in most cases, you can expect to return home shortly after the surgery, and resume light activities within one to three weeks.

Post-operation pain generally fades after a few days, but exercise should be avoided until you are advised otherwise. Close follow-up with Dr. Foster is paramount during the recovery period.
